Ants hate cinnamon.
It's something I marvel at during these summer months. As it warms up outside, ants magically find their way inside. How could it be possible that something so delicious and beneficial to us, be loathed and despised by ants? I don't know, but there truly is an organic, zero- or low-waste solution to every problem.

Recently, we had an ant invasion.
I was once again astonished by how effective cinnamon is when it comes to ants. The strong scent of cinnamon is what they abhor so they avoid it all costs. The scent also covers up the scent trails they leave for each other for communication so it's doubly efficient. I first figure out where the ants are coming from, and then sprinkle cinnamon near the source. If possible, it also helps to somehow stop up any crack or hole you find that they might be using and then once again sprinkle that area with cinnamon.
If it looks like the invasion has passed, you can clean up the cinnamon, but if the coast isn't quite clear yet, you can just leave the cinnamon there for weeks. Its scent will remain for a while and since it's non-toxic you don't have to worry about any ill effects on you and your loved ones.
I know! It sounds too simple and tasty to be true -but it is! Try it and let me know how it goes.
Thanks for reading!
